When will racing return?
It has been announced that the earliest racing could possibly return in Britain will be the 1st June! There had been plans put in place by the British Horse Racing Authority (BHA) for the last two weekends in May for racing to go ahead behind closed doors, but Boris Johnson has prevented this from going ahead by his announcement made last weekend.
I was hopeful that racing would return sooner than June as France returned on Monday this week, hence I didn’t see much reason for us not to follow suit. It is going to be tricky for trainers to get their horses right for their big race aims as they have no idea when these races will happen, for example, when will the Derby go ahead at Epsom?
The BHA is working with the government to meet their aims in preventing the spread of Covid-19, which means that racing will be one of the first professional sports to return. It can be frustrating seeing other countries successfully going ahead with racing whilst we are still stuck in lockdown with no further progress in racing returning here. The Queen has even said she admired Australia for continuing with racing, hence should racing here return sooner than the government is saying?
Big trainers like John Gosden and Richard Hughes believe racing is capable of safely returning behind closed doors. The racing industry is working towards a resumption on the 1st June which has given trainers and owners some relief as now at least there is a date in mind as to when racing could possibly return.
Royal Ascot will still go ahead behind closed doors at this current time with plans being scheduled to make sure all of the big race Classics still go ahead. This is vital for racing that we don’t lose these big races like the Guineas as this would have a detrimental effect on the breeding industry if these races were cancelled.
So, at the moment racing will resume earliest the 1st June and this is the date the BHA and government are working together towards. Professional sports will be judged by people as to when they return so there needs to be a sensible decision made as to when it is safe for racing to resume. Fingers crossed we don’t have to wait too much longer and we can start seeing our horses back in action! 🤞
Stay safe and well
